Kawashima Co., Ltd., an old-established shop that started up in Edo (Tokyo at present) in 1673, is known as a pioneer which has the oldest history (300-odd years) in the fusuma paper and wallpaper industries. In the Edo Period, we sold fusuma papers and wallpapers, etc. Then we started to wholesale wallpapers in the Taisho Era.
It was 1945 that the wallpaper industry greatly advanced. It was the time when the Western lifestyles and its skills were introduced to our country by building the casern for American soldiers.
The housing construction methods were advanced from traditional ones. The so-called “dry construction method,” using blockboards and plasterboards for the base and attaching wallpapers on them, was diffused, shortening construction period, and facilitating house construction.
Around 1964, when the Tokyo Olympic Games was held, constructions of hotels, restaurants and shops, etc. became active. In addition, wallpaper materials were diversified, including fabric (cloth), plastic, metallic foil, and even ones made from plants such as kudzu and arundinaceous.
The wallpaper industry has extended its business and products, dealing with curtains, carpets, construction materials and construction work. In response to the diversification of the industry, we divided the sales staff into some departments that best match respective sales person’s ability to further rationalize our management, and at present, three subsidiaries are around. The sales people were separated, but we placed showrooms as well as retail sections in our main office in order to support their activities. In this way, we accommodate our clients.
